Jeff Baena, a talented writer and director known for films such as "Life After Beth" and "The Little Hours," has passed away at the age of 47. His death occurred at his home in Los Angeles, and the cause of death is currently listed as deferred in coroner records, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.


Baena was renowned for his collaborative work with his wife, actor and comedian Aubrey Plaza. The couple partnered on various projects, including the 2014 horror-comedy "Life After Beth," the 2017 film "The Little Hours," as well as the 2021 comedy series "Cinema Toast" and the 2022 film "Spin Me Round." He also directed Plaza in the 2020 drama "Horse Girl," which featured Alison Brie, another frequent collaborator.


In addition to his directorial work, Baena co-wrote the highly regarded 2004 film "I Heart Huckabees," starring Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, and directed the dramedy "Joshy" in 2016 with a cast led by Thomas Middleditch.

Baena was a graduate of NYU Tisch Film School and began his career in the entertainment industry as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis and as an assistant editor for David O. Russell, contributing to his work on "Huckabees." 


In a 2022 interview, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had in filmmaking and reflected on his strong collaboration with Plaza. "Having that sort of shorthand and that sort of connection is amazing,” he remarked about working with her.


He is survived by his wife, Plaza, as well as his parents, stepparents, and several siblings. His passing is a significant loss to the film community, and he is remembered for his unique voice and contributions to cinema.
