The number of people applying for visas to work and study in the UK has seen a significant decline, with nearly 400,000 fewer applications recorded following the introduction of new immigration restrictions aimed at reducing legal migration. Provisional figures from the Home Office reveal that from April to December 2024, there were 547,000 visa applications, a stark decrease from 942,500 during the same period in 2023.
This represents a decrease of 395,100 applications, or 42%. The decline has been particularly noticeable among overseas students and foreign care workers, driven by policy changes enacted by the former Conservative government between January and April 2024. These changes included measures such as banning overseas care workers from bringing family dependants and raising the salary threshold for skilled workers to £38,700.
Furthermore, reforms affected overseas students, prohibiting them from bringing family members and tightening the rules for British citizens earning below the national average who wish to bring foreign spouses to the UK.

The implications of these changes have raised alarms, as universities and the care sector fear the potential consequences of reduced overseas enrollment and staffing levels. While overall visa requests dropped by 42%, the scale of decline varied by category: applications for health and care worker visas plummeted by 79%, while sponsored study visa applications fell by 29%.
In contrast, the decline in skilled worker visa applications was much smaller, with only a 3% drop compared to the previous year, indicating that this category has remained relatively stable. The changes in immigration policy have prompted concerns about financial implications for universities and the care sector, both of which heavily rely on overseas students and workers
