• Executive actions: Tuesday marks President Donald Trump’s first full day back in office, and he is expected to sign more executive actions, meet with congressional Republican leaders and make a “massive” infrastructure announcement as he moves to enact his sweeping agenda. Trump’s actions on immigration, which included declaring a national emergency at the US southern border, will prompt a widespread crackdown.

• Pardons for January 6 rioters: Trump on Monday pardoned more than 1,000 people charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, and he commuted the sentences of far-right extremist leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

• Trump threatens tariffs: Trump said his administration will impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on February 1, a change in North American trade policy that could raise prices for American consumers.

• Confirmation hearings: Some of Trump’s Cabinet selections will appear before the Senate today, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, his choice for UN ambassador, and former Georgia Rep. Douglas Collins, his pick for secretary of veterans affairs. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio was sworn in as secretary of state today after a unanimous confirmation vote, making him the first of Trump’s nominees to take office.
