Trump begins second term with series of sweeping executive actions

• Executive actions: Tuesday marks President Donald Trump’s first full day back in office, and he is expected to sign more executive actions, meet with congressional Republican leaders and make a “massive” infrastructure announcement as he moves to enact his sweeping agenda. Trump’s actions on immigration, which included declaring a national emergency at the US southern border, will prompt a widespread crackdown.
• Pardons for January 6 rioters: Trump on Monday pardoned more than 1,000 people charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, and he commuted the sentences of far-right extremist leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
• Trump threatens tariffs: Trump said his administration will impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on February 1, a change in North American trade policy that could raise prices for American consumers.
• Confirmation hearings: Some of Trump’s Cabinet selections will appear before the Senate today, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, his choice for UN ambassador, and former Georgia Rep.
