On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced a proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," sparking quick legislative action from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia. Greene expressed enthusiastic support for the idea, stating she would introduce a bill to formalize the name change, asserting that the Gulf should reflect America's sovereignty and the contributions of the U.S. armed forces in the region.

In her statement about the forthcoming legislation, Greene highlighted issues related to crime and trafficking in the Gulf area, placing blame on Mexican cartels and the Mexican government. She argued that the name change is warranted as the U.S. plays a significant role in securing the waters, which she believes should be recognized in the body of water's name.

Following Trump's announcement, other Republican lawmakers jumped on the bandwagon, expressing their support through social media. Rep. Greg Steube from Florida encouraged his constituents to enjoy the "Gulf of AMERICA," while Alabama lawmakers, like Rep. Barry Moore and Sen. Tommy Tuberville, echoed similar sentiments about the Gulf’s importance to the nation and their pride in representing the area.

Greene's proposed measure to officially rename the Gulf will be filed shortly, with plans for federal documents and maps to reflect the change if it gains traction in Congress. Trump is set to be inaugurated on January 20, just weeks away from the announcement.
