Seven House Democrats switched their votes to support a GOP-led bill, the Laken Riley Act, which mandates the detention of migrants accused of theft, resulting in a 264-159 vote that included 48 Democrats backing the measure. Originally passed in March with support from 37 Democrats, the bill failed in the Democratic-led Senate.

The Democrats who changed their votes are Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), Val Hoyle (D-Ore.), Lucy McBath (D-Ga.), Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), and Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), with Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) voting for the first time. The bill lost some Democratic support from four members who are no longer in the House.

Named after a slain Georgia student, Laken Riley, the law allows for the detention of migrants, including asylum seekers, if they are accused of shoplifting or similar crimes. Critics, including Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), called out the bill for significant issues and expressed concern over its implications on immigration policies. Notably, the revised version of the bill did not include direct criticisms of President Biden or his immigration policies, which may have influenced some Democrats to support it.
